Volunteer Spotlight: Nicole Kryger
All Star Volunteer!
I don't think we have ever seen one person be so good at and involved in every aspect of Chintimini Wildlife Center as Nicole Kryger is. Nicole started as a Mon AM shift volunteer in August 2009. I met her on her second week as we went up to the admission station to admit an orphaned Douglas squirrel. As we walked up the long driveway, discussing proper protocol for admitting patients, I noticed right away her positive energy, her sincere interest in helping wildlife, and her desire to learn more about wildlife rehab. This turned out to be an understatement.
Not long after she became a trained level I volunteer, Nicole also joined the Education Bird Program where she is a raptor handler for several of our resident raptors. Along with working with and tending to the birds, ed bird handlers give educational presentations to schools and at scheduled events.
From there, it wasn't long until she moved up from shift volunteer to Shift Leader. Then, Nicole was voted onto the CWC Board of Directors. Meanwhile, as a shift leader in the clinic, she excelled. Nicole also started doing the occasional homecare patient, which usually involves tirelessly feeding and cleaning orphaned baby mammals throughout the day and night. Of course, Nicole was great at this. At some point, Nicole was interested in homecaring baby rabbits. They can be quite a sensitive and stressed species to rehab, but Nicole was up for the challenge. That first bunny made it, as did the majority of the bunnies she homecared. If there is one orphaned mammal species that has the lowest success rate and causes a lot of heartbreak, it is bunnies. So, as you may have guessed, Nicole moved up to become the Rabbit Homecare Species Leader, where she continues to have great success.
In the fund-raising and marketing department, Nicole is also a natural. She has worked endlessly over the past few years helping design flyers, shirts, merchandise, supplying ideas, managing events, etc. She is wonderful at marketing and uses these skills to better CWC. She currently holds the position of the CWC Marketing Director.
As of last year, Nicole started working during the busy season in the clinic as an Animal Care Tech. She has become a fabulous addition to the CWC clinic and all of our wildlife patients are lucky to be in her hands.
Thanks, Nicole for ALL that you do for CWC! You are a crucial individual to this organization, and we are so grateful for all of your hard work!
