Skunks (Mephitis mephitis)
Skunks are one of these least desirable nocturnal visitors because of their odorous nature and their ability to spray if they are disturbed. They will often take up residence under houses and porches and in woodpiles and barns, so the exclusion techniques described in Removing Unwanted Wildlife Guests apply also to skunks.

Skunks are very good diggers, so you may have to bury wire a foot or so deep around the site where they are trying to get in. They are also attracted to garbage, pet food, and garden fruits and vegetables, so removing or protecting these food sources will keep them from staying around.

Although the rabies virus has not been documented in skunks in Oregon, it has been found in California skunks, and it is only a matter of time before it makes its way north. If you see a skunk moving around in daylight or if it is acting unbalanced and disoriented, absolutely do not attempt to handle it. Contact a local wildlife rehabilitator or an animal control office.
