Volunteer Spotlight

Jackie Houser

Volunteer Jackie Houser How long have you been @ CWC?
I have been volunteering at CWC for almost 2 years, since May of 2015.

What shift(s) are you on?
Saturday AM and midday.

Do you have a field of study (past or present)?
I'm a 3rd year veterinary student at OSU College of Veterinary Medicine. I guess you could say my life revolves around animals.

Are you employed outside of your CWC volunteer position?
No, vet school pretty much takes up all of my time. Plus, volunteering at Chintimini is more fun than work!

What is your favorite part about volunteering at CWC?
I love the medical care side of rehabilitating wildlife. I really enjoy being able to watch a patient from intake to release, seeing them go from their worst to their best while they are here. It's so nice to see success stories, and to see the difference we are making. I also love my shift-mates, we are like family!

Do you have a favorite or most memorable patient (past or present)?
The most memorable patient for me was on my first ever shift. I was invited along for a release/rehoming of an orphaned baby barn swallow. We brought him back to the barn he was found at, found a nest actively used by barn swallows, and I got to climb a huge ladder and place him in the nest. It was a fun and very memorable first shift for me!

What is something that your shift may not know about you?
That's a tough one, because I feel like my shift knows me pretty well...But they may not know about my secret skill of being able to burp the alphabet!

What book is currently on your nightstand?
I'm reading 3 books right now: Envy by Yuri Olesha; Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond; and The Autumn of the Patriarch by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

What music is in your car right now?
I'm all about podcasts while I drive. Right now its My Favorite Murder - a true crime comedy podcast. Highly recommend it!

Where are you from?
Oregon, born and raised. I grew up in Beaverton, just outside of Portland.
