How long have you been @ CWC?
Just over a year (since November 2015).
What shift(s) are you on?
Do you have a field of study (past or present)?
Nothing directly related to the work I do at Chintimini. I studied economics, political science, and Spanish in college. I also studied at a culinary school, which I suppose helps when I'm preparing those super tasty diets for the patients.
Are you employed outside of your CWC volunteer position?
Yes, I own a small soapmaking company called Park Soap. Although most of my time at the moment is spent building my 260 sq. ft. tiny house.
What is your favorite part about volunteering at CWC?
I love learning about the different species that are found in this part of the country. As a recent transplant from NYC, and someone with very little prior knowledge of wildlife in general, I find each shift to be an incredible hands-on opportunity to learn.
Do you have a favorite or most memorable patient (past or present)?
A Red-Tailed Hawk that was the very first patient I went out "into the wild" to retrieve after we received a call from a member of the public. Crawling around through a ditch and thick briars to get him was certainly an adventure. Sadly, his injuries were too severe and he only survived a short time after arriving at the clinic, but he lodged himself firmly in my heart.
What is something that your shift may not know about you?
I secretly love doing laundry and dishes. Shhh.
What book is currently on your nightstand?
The Humanure Handbook
. Not the least bit glamorous, I know, but I'll have a pretty cool composting toilet in my new house, so I need to know this stuff.
What music is in your car right now?
NPR or podcasts.
Where are you from?
Currently live in Corvallis, Originally from Ohio, with 22 years spent in Illinois, Maryland, Washington DC, and New York in between.
