Camp Coordinator

Reports to:  Education Program Director

Compensation: $18.00 – $20.00/hour

Hours: 30-40 hours per week to be completed in-person at Chintimini Wildlife Center. Training & prep weeks sometimes offer more flexibility, with between 20-30 hours being scheduled. For camp weeks, expect to work a full 40 hours. 

Schedule: Scheduling for this position follows our youth summer camp schedule, with most work hours scheduled between 8:00 am-5:30 pm M-F.

Anticipated start date: June 10, 2024

Anticipated end date: August 30, 2024

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Camp Coordinator position plays a critical role in our summer youth education program. The Camp Coordinator will lead a team of 2 Youth Educators preparing daily lessons, activities, arts and crafts projects, etc. for each week of our themed summer day camps. Each day of camp, the Camp Coordinator will manage and work with the Youth Educators to lead campers through the daily schedule, ensure that campers are participating and engaging to the extent that they are comfortable and able to, and that any problems or concerns are quickly addressed with the camper, their family member, and/or education program leadership in a professional and efficient manner.

This position works in cooperation with other education program staff, interns, and volunteers to provide all participants with a fun, engaging, educational, and safe camp experience. Overall, the work of this individual supports the program in meeting its goals, and supports the organization in achieving its mission of connecting people and wildlife through education. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, design, and implement creative, interactive and age-appropriate educational activities for CWC day campers, ages 6 – 9 and 10 – 12.
  • Coordinate day camp activities with Education Department staff to ensure safety,
    compliance, and quality experiences of campers. 
  • Train and provide direction to program assistants (Youth Educators).
  • Ensure camper compliance with program and facility rules.
  • Check-in and release day campers according to established procedures.
  • Communicate with camper families about upcoming plans and changes.
  • Provide for the physical needs of campers with regard to hydration, sun exposure,
    nutrition and first-aid as needed.
  • Immediately report incidents and injuries that occur to the Education Manager and/or Executive Director.
  •  Maintain timely correspondence with team members throughout the day via email,
    phone, electronic messages, and radio.
  • Maintain CWC facilities in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Attend and participate in staff/program meetings as requested.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and printers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Biology, Zoology or related area
     
  • At least one year of experience working with children in an organized recreational or
    educational setting.
  • First-Aid Certificate issues by a recognized first aid training program
  •  CPR Certificate by a recognized CPR training program.
  •  A valid Oregon Driver’s License.
  •  Passion for CWC’s mission

  • Strong verbal communication & customer service skills
  • Ability to foster teamwork, lead by example, approach problems in a solutions-
    oriented manner, and create a positive work environment through
    appropriate and timely communication.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in youth education, biology, zoology, or other related fields.
  • Knowledge of Oregon’s native flora and fauna
  • Three or more years of experience with leading camps, youth programs, recreation, working with children, K-5 education, or in a related field.
  • Familiarity or experience working in wildlife education, particularly with wildlife ambassadors
  • Bilingual

Youth Educator

Each day of camp, the Youth Educators will work as a team to lead campers through the daily schedule, ensure that campers are participating and engaging to the extent that they are comfortable and able to, and that any problems or concerns are quickly addressed with the camper, their family member, and/or education program leadership in a professional and efficient manner.

This position works in cooperation with other education program staff, interns, and volunteers to provide all participants with a fun, engaging, educational, and safe camp experience. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Camp Activities: 70-75%
  • Maintain accurate program records including daily check-in and check-out forms, incident reports, etc.
  • Cultivate a welcoming atmosphere for all camp participants that enables campers to make friends, learn new skills, explore and learn about nature, internalize a sense of environmental stewardship, and overall have a positive outdoor experience.
  • Assist Camp Coordinator in leading campers through a daily schedule of activities, ensuring that all participants understand and follow program rules throughout the day.
  • Assist Camp Coordinator in organizing and leading a variety of small and large group (up to 15 campers) activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature activities, songs, games, etc.
  • Identify and respond to camper behavior issues as they arise, and as proactively as possible.
  • Ensure that education facilities are cleaned and organized daily.
  • Know/review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately.
  • Preparation & Planning: 20%
  • Work with Camp Coordinator to plan and prepare schedules for each week of camp based on the weekly theme. Summer camp age groups alternate between ages 6 – 9 or ages 10 – 12, with two weeks of all ages combined.
  • Communicate/Liaise with Camp Families: 5-10%
  • Build rapport with camp families and be available to respond to questions, concerns, or other topics that may arise
  • Communicate proactively with parents about challenges with a participant’s experiences at camp and report concerns to program leadership as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 6 months or more of experience in child care (leading camps, youth programs, recreation, working with children, K-5 education, or in a related field.)
  • Knowledge of Oregon’s native flora and fauna
  • Demonstrated passion for CWC’s mission
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to complete tasks unsupervised
  • Strong verbal communication & customer service skills
  • Ability to foster teamwork, lead by example, approach problems in a solutions-oriented manner, and create a positive work environment through appropriate and timely communication.
